How to run a pub quiz that brings people back every week

A great pub quiz has a simple rhythm: players know what to do, the host is not fighting the technology and every round ends with a small moment of excitement.

1. Start with a short, clear format

For your first night, plan 30–40 questions across four or five rounds. Mix general knowledge, music, film, sport and one themed round.

• 8–10 questions per round
• one warm-up question
• one visual or music round
• a higher-stakes finale

2. Decide the scoring before the game

Predictability matters. Tell players how many points an answer is worth, how long they have and when answers close.

3. Give the room one screen and one QR

A TV, projector or large monitor is enough. Show the question, timer and join code while teams answer on their phones.
